More on the prepositon a and when to use it but not sure what the word 'arcaísmo' means

From my workbook::

Usa **a **cuando se refiere a ubicación física(arcaísmo): Las tropas están a las puertas de la ciudad sitiada

It means archaism (archaic). In this context it means that the usage of the preposition a was commonly used in that fashion once upon a time, but has fallen out of everyday usage. I hope this helps.

"arcaísmo" = an ancient or old-fashioned word, phrase, or saying.
