A - Z Game: Everything Related to Birds

I just love these A-Z games and didn't see one on everything having to do with Birds and Bird Watching (Birding): bird names, bird habitat, bird body parts, bird nesting materials, foods birds eat, types of bird feeders, accessories used with bird feeders, items used to attract birds to your yard, categories of birds (such as predators, flightless, waterfowl, etc.), enemies/predators of birds, birding lodges, birding equipment (such as binoculars, etc.), birding tours, popular or famous birding areas, bird listing etc.

So .....here we go!

I will start with a Spanish word that begins with "A", then you post a Spanish word that starts with "B", then "C" and so on. Please include an English translation of your Spanish word.

My word:

A = (el) alpiste = birdseed

Be sure to click on N E W E S T before posting your answer.

Have fun!

I thought there was, too. But, I couldn't find it. - Pajaro44, Jul 22, 2010
I couldn't find it either. - MeEncantanCarasSonrisas, Jul 22, 2010
Well you're just the person to initiate it.:) - Yeser007, Jul 22, 2010
I just looked through Fidalgos entire catalogue of A-Z and there is nothing strictly on birds. - Yeser007, Jul 22, 2010
Lots of scope here - good game, Pájaro. :) - peregrinamaria, Jul 22, 2010
Just looks familiar because of MECs Night owls and Early Birds. And included in some of the animals - LateToDinner, Jul 23, 2010
Will you be making these into flashcards? - sagiia, Jul 25, 2010

I wanted to write about hummingbird's.

There are a lot of different names for these little birds in Spanish! If you just want a basic translation that could be used in any Spanish-speaking country, it's colibrí.

But you can also say:

pájaro mosca ("fly bird," "fly" as in the insect, because of its size)

chupaflor ("flower sipper," only used in Mexico and some other areas)

chuparrosa ("rose sipper," only used in Mexico)

chupamirto ("myrtle sipper," only used in Mexico)

picaflor ("flower piercer," especially used in South America)

zunzún (a word that imitates the sound they make; only used in the Caribbean)

gorrión (in Central America it means hummingbird but in Spain the same word means a different kind of bird)

chupamiel ("honey sipper," used poetically)

visitaflor ("flower visiter," used poetically)

joyas voladores ("flying jewels," used poetically)

Existir = to exist

Approximately 10,000 species of birds exist in the world!

link to birding.com

By far the largest concentration of bird species are found in South America. Over 3,200 species have been seen there. In Colombia, Bolivia and Peru the species count for each country tops 1,700. Here are some very general figures for the species count for each continent:

3,200 South America

2,900 Asia

2,300 Africa

2,000 North America (from Panama north + Caribbean)

1,700 Australia + surrounding islands

1,000 Europe

 65  Antarctica

Ubicación = location

If you want to see a particular species of bird, it's really helpful to know the location of recent sightings of the bird.

T

Tejas = Texas

One of the great birding destinations in the U. S. A. Especially true of the Gulf of Mexico coast and the entire Rio Grande valley.
