link text

I am still being fussy about pronunciation, particularly of ll (elle). It may seem picky, but I read so much which appears to say that it should be pronounced like the y in English yes, and yet my Ecuadorian friend insists to me that this pronunciation is incorrect . As he is a good friend and I don't want to doubt him, I am still trying to get to grips with this. He says it should sound like the lli in English million, although his wife says when he talks normally he pronounces it as the j in juice... wink

The link above gives detailed descriptions with diagrams of how some sounds are formed, (including elle of course) plus a really large number of mp3 recordings of many many native speakers from all over Spain and America, all reading the same text which contains many examples of these words. Hope others enjoy it too. smile

What I take from it is that this letter is produced by a greater or lesser degree of saying the y in yes sound but with the tongue against the roof of the mouth and allowing differing amounts of air to pass around it, which with experimentation I find can produce a variety of sounds! So it rather like an l and y pronounced simultaneously.

Does this sound right to anyone else?

Thanks Vaanz, 'y' in yes really seems by far the easiest, I'll just try it next time I see my friend and see if he notices that I'm not attempting the million way!
