Whether it's "I want to try to do..." or "I want to try to sing...", would it just be two infinitives in a row?

Besides tratar, I believe that you might also use "intentar." For example, "quiero intentar hacer algo." - Izanoni1, Jul 17, 2010
"Procurar" can also mean "try," but I am not sure that it would sound right after the verb "querer" - Izanoni1, Jul 17, 2010

Quiero tratar de cantar = I want to try to sing. I would use tratar in this situation. The reason why de is used can be better explained by the link below. i hope this helps.

spanish.about.com - tratar

The is some contextual difference in to try...

Do you mean to try out (try out different foods, styles, etc.) (take it for a test drive)

I want to make a successful/unsuccessful attempt to.....(take a stab at) (to try and put the square peg in the round hole)

I want to try to sing...and if that doesn't pan out I'll be a musician.

I want to try to sing..but I have a sore throat and probably won't be able to.
