Origin of Hacer Malla

Hello,

I'd like to know if someone can tell me the origin of the definition for knitting : hacer malla. Malla means chain mail, or net, or mesh.

I'd love to know if the origin of this phrase came from the making of chain mail, or from fishing nets and such, and when it was first used.
