Word of the Day - error??

This sentence from the word of the day doesn't make sense to me:
El presidente podrido le robaron millones de dólares de su país. - The corrupt president stole millions of dollars from his country.
"Le robaron" gives me the idea that some group of people robbed the president. Is this an error or is there some grammatical concept that I don't understand?
