What's the difference between vos and tu?

What's the difference between vos and tu?

I speak "Mexican Spanish" where we frequently use tu when speaking in the second person informal singular.

However, I have some friends from Costa Rica who sometimes when speaking with me call me vos.

I don't remember learning vos in my Spanish classes in school. Is this slang? Or can someone answer what is vos as compared to tu?
