Why does Bob call himself Joe when everyone else calls him Bob

Why does Bob call himself Joe when everyone else calls him Bob

Por qué Bob se llama a si mismo "Joe" cuando todo lo demás se llaman Bob. I know this is wrong, I couldn't figure out how to say something like this yesterday. Does todo lo demás mean "everyone else" or just "Everything else"? Gracias.

Probably the very first thing I learned over 2 years ago was to never use two le/la sounds together and alwasy to switch the pronoun to SE if followed by an L. (Barron's Spanish I think) Why is it le llaman and not se llaman here in that case? Gracias.

Jeezle,

You may be missing the point. This is not of case of seeing se when two third person object pronouns both exist together.

Llamarse is used reflexively. Me llamo, te llamas, se llama.... I call myself, you call yourself, he calls himself

When you call someone else something, however, you are no longer using the reflexive verb. You now use object pronouns (le in this case) rather than reflexive pronouns (se).

Ella le llama a Bob por el nombre "Roberto".

Oh wow I was missing the point. Good show Qfreed. One question though. since llamarse is to call yourself is "a si mismo" necesarry in the above sentence? It seems necessary but I wasn't sure. - jeezzle, Jul 3, 2010
No, it's not necessary, but I'm always in favor of clarity (including using subject pronouns which everyone hates here). - 0074b507, Jul 3, 2010

I thought "todos los demás" meant everyone else and "todo lo demás" meant everything/anything else. But I am not entirely sure.

todo lo demás=all of the remaining/rest/balance, everyone remaining. everything remaining

everyone, all, everybody, the rest is singular=lo

All of the candy leftover from Halloween is (singular) to be donated.

todos los demás=all of those (people, things) remaining is plural

All of those things need (plural) to be donated yet.

Either the singular or the plural can refer to things or people.

Jeezzle asked:

Do you think it's right now?

I like this:

¿Por qué Bob se llama a sí mismo "Joe" cuando todo lo demás le llaman "Bob?"

That's when you have an indirect and direct object side by side -- le lo di (I gave it to him) becomes "se lo di" to avoid the "le lo" combination. I'm not sure if you have to do that when we don't have the direct and indirect object side/side. - --Mariana--, Jul 3, 2010
That is when there are two pronouns both starting with L. Le lo dije doesn't work but Se lo dije does. The verb's L doesn't count. Se llaman here would be "they call themselves" - 003487d6, Jul 3, 2010
Here we have "le" and a verb side by side. - --Mariana--, Jul 3, 2010
Interesting, I believe I have been taught wrong by a certain book, which I will have to check. Maybe it was Michelle Thomas now that I think about it, who said that two L's can never go together - IO/DO or beyongd. - jeezzle, Jul 3, 2010

Hey Jeezzle. I've heard "todo lo demás" to mean exactly that -- everyone else.

Why did you use "llamase" instead of "todo lo demás le llaman...."?

Do you think it's right now? I feel iike something is missing or there's a part I'm not getting right. - jeezzle, Jul 3, 2010
le llaman :) - 003487d6, Jul 3, 2010
Thanks, Dandi. I changed it. - --Mariana--, Jul 3, 2010
sí mismo con acento también - 003487d6, Jul 3, 2010
le llaman? Doesn't that fly in the face of the le la rule? - jeezzle, Jul 3, 2010
What rule do you mean? - 003487d6, Jul 3, 2010

¿Por qué Bob se llama a sí mismo "Joe" cuando todos los demás le llaman/dicen Bob?

From my mom: ¿Porque se refiere Bob a si mismo como Jose, en vez de llamarse Bob, como lo hacen todos los demas?
