I'm not understanding the question (or the answer really) sorry! Cross section of a study (for example) can be 'En la muestra representative...'

I think that they are talking about passing a plane through a solid object type of cross section. e.g. A cross section of a 3 sided pyramid is a triangle. The cross section of a cube is a square. Not a representative sampling. - 0074b507, Jul 2, 2010

One dictionary renders cross section as sección transversal or corte transversal.
La corte transveral de una esfera parece un círculo.
To me, however, that is saying a right angle cross section which may not be what you want.
una sección o corte por la cosa hecha(o) a treinta grados...
