Can this be used in the figurative sense? He's in a room with a couple of ladies and says this to someone knocking on the door. "Oye, estoy tratando de anotar". Does this work or is this taking too many liberties? Gracias.

If you mean it as "score", then I think that you'd better try switching to coffee or tobacco for a while.
