My Absence

My Absence

I just thought I would let you know that I have been travelling through Spain and Portugal the last 3 weeks, hence my absence. If anyone is interested, the places I visited were as follows. Santander, Salamanca, Mafra (near Lisbon), Plasencia, Madrid and finally back to Santander, some 1800 miles, door to door. And yes, while in Madrid, I did get to meet with Heidi. One crazy young lady if you ask me but what great fun. She couldn't have made us more welcome. She dragged my wife and I around places that we would never have entered on our own mainly because they were packed with youngsters. Finally we started to feel a lot younger ourselves, hehe.

I also met an American and his Venezuelan wife in a small town called Santillana Del Mar about 30 minutes from Santander. He told me a story which I thought was very funny which he insisted was true. I doubt its validity so I am asking our American members if any of them have heard it before.

It concerns a Spanish speaker who was trying to purchase a can of Coca Cola from a vending machine. He told me the sex of the person but I am keeping this quiet to avoid embarrassment. This machine sounds similar to the ones we have over here. As you insert the small change an illuminated screen counts down the remainder of the money you have to enter. Finally SHE had to enter the last 10 cents with the screen displaying the word DIME. SHE leaned forward and whispered into the coin slot, una Coca Cola por favour. True or False, hehe.

Hadn't heard the story before but I do remember an acquaintance telling me that every time HE saw a 'Dime Savings Bank' (we have them in NY, I'm not sure about other places), he always read it (to himself) as "¡Dime!".

Muy gracioso Eddy. LOL LOL I hope you and your wife are enjoying yourself. I am very jealous. I have heard a bit about your travels and it seems like you have truly experienced Madrid and the rest of Spain.

Will you be learning Portuguese next or do you already know it? wink

At least you didn't say she was blond!

Yes, that made me laugh as well.

And, I can truly understand how that could happen to someone. After I have spent a lot of time studying Spanish, I sometimes misread an English word as if it were in Spanish. jejeje

Eddie, you and your wife must have experienced a great many terrific things if all was

like the short summary that you gave us. I had never heard the Coca-Cola story. I

needed that laugh today. You were MISSED on Spanishdict. Welcome home. wink

I get it It was probably confusing the Spanish command dime(tell me) with the English word dime. You can blame her if she didn´t know English.
