The closest that I can think of is "No esperaba saber de tí tan pronto" but I'm sure it is laughably wrong. Can anyone think of how you might say this? Gracias.

Qué tal..'No esperaba recibir tus noticias tan pronto' or 'recibir noticias tuyas..' - margaretbl, Jun 23, 2010
I see nothing wrong with your sentence, Jeez. - alba3, Jun 23, 2010

Jeezle I think that you have made a good effort and you may not be as far out as you think

I didn't expect to hear from you so soon

:= No esperaba recibir tus noticias tan pronto

**No pensaba recibir tus noticias tan pronto**

that is my best effort now I hope that it helps grin

I have checked with a book of mine called:2001 Spanish and English Idioms by Eugene Savaiano and Lynn W Winget (segunda edición)

and it gave me the expression to hear from = recibir noticias de... so I have adjusted my response accordingly so Hopefully it should be more accurate.

Oirte is more 'to hear you', though, isn't it? 'To hear from you' is like 'to get a message: 'saber de alguien' or 'tener noticias de alguien'. - MacFadden, Jun 23, 2010
Okay i recognize that I made a mistake and adjusted my resposne accordingly as I mentioned in my post - FELIZ77, Jun 23, 2010
That looks much better to me. - MacFadden, Jun 23, 2010

I don;t think oirte is right. I don't think you "hear" from someone in Spanish like you do in English. I think you "know" from them, but I could use a confirmation. Seems like there is less people around lately.

I agree. I think your translation is about right. You could also use 'tener noticias de ti'. And I'm not sure about this, but I have a feeling you could also use 'pensaba' for 'esperaba'. - MacFadden, Jun 23, 2010
