este...demonstrative adjective...this book (modifies masculine, singular nouns)

este or éste (tilde not mandatory)...demonstrative pronoun...this one, this thing... This one is the correct one. Here the "one" must refer to a masculine, singular noun.

este=East (compass direction)

este=filler word for um, er, etc.

esto...can only be a demonstrative pronoun. It is neuter and only refers to abstract concepts or unknowns which have no gender.

I think

Este must be followed by a noun like

Este lapiz- this pencil

while Esto must stand by itself.

Esto lapiz - Wrong
