La gente habla (el) español. Is the "el" needed here or can it be omitted? Can someone explain when definite articles are needed?

After certain verbs the definite articles are not used with languages. Hablar happens to be one of them, so the "el" is not needed in your example. They are also omitted after some prepositions like en and de with languages.
