Hace mucho calor o Está muy caliente?

Both means "It is very hot", but which of them is more correct?

I think I would go with 'hace mucho calor' just because 'caliente' can have sexual meaning (horny) in addition to heat. I know this because I have dated a couple Spanish speaking guys and have gotten text messages to this effect. There was no doubt whatsoever what they meant wink when they said 'Estoy caliente'. I have also heard 'Eres caliente', and that meant you are hot looking, as we hope that is not going to change, at least any time soon! Hope this helps. LOL

Hace mucho calor = It's very warm (hot) when talking about the weather

Está muy caliente = It (he/she/you formal) is hot ...like coffee, the radiator, etc.

Agree with Marianne.

Hace calor when talking about the weather, está caliente when talking about the temperature of an item.

I agree with Chica. Hace calor, or even tengo calor (I am hot) is better than using caliente, for the sexual undertones she outlined above. I have made the mistake of using caliente, and you get called out on it fast. smile

Hace mucho calor is more common. Or you can say "El día está muy caliente" so you can specify what is that is caliente...
