How do you say "language skills" in Spanish?

Hi, I was basically wondering how to translate "language" (as an adjective) into Spanish. I've only been able to find it as a noun. I don't think "linguistic" has the precise meaning I'm looking for, but I just may settle for "lingüístico."

Conocimientos de idiomas.

Unless you want to use "linguistic" ...

Competencias lingüísticas.

I'm actually trying to say language skills in reference to a young child, such as a 5-year-old, and their ability to communicate in their first language. - Maureen-Early, Jun 21, 2010
