I just felt overwhelmed

Question

I have followed the attempts to stop the gusher in the Gulf of Mexico. (They should never have called this a spill,that implies something finite/completed not ongoing).But I must admit it is only fearful peeks at headlines and hopes as they rose and fell.

I looked at pictures of pelicans obscured in oil today.Read the article about the wildlife fleeing to the shallows on the internet earlier.I wonder how this compares to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, or the eruption of Krakatoa?What can compare to this?

Are those of us removed from the beautiful Gulf shores going on with life as usual as we watch something with ramifications beyond our comprehension begin to change the life of everyone on the planet?

I know this sounds dramatic but it just hit me that way.

Definitely the worst catastrophe for everybody, wild life and man.

Today in the news paper I read they are being made pay I don¡t know how many million dollars for the victims. And my thoughts were.....are all those birds included? What about the fish? Maybe this is because I am a diver, but there is so much life down there!

Billions for an escrow.Yes I am most worried about the wildlife. People might hat it but they do have the ability to move that aquatic fauna do not have.I am afraid we are going to find out how important this ecosystem is in more than a "lifestyle" way - nizhoni1, Jun 17, 2010

Overwhelmed, down in the dumps, at a loss, disheartened, sickened, disgusted, powerless, angry, worried, anxious, nervous, outraged, fed up, sad, pissed off, depressed.....

Yes, I've run the entire gamut of emotions on this one, and like you, I too am still feeling overwhelmed by it all. If anything, I think more people should take this as seriously as you do. Concerning your last statement, it would be nice if this were simply all an act of fiction; however, this is not the case. This little "drama" is, unfortunately, all too real.

I don't think you're being over dramatic. BP has pledged 20 billion to compensate people impacted. To me, it sounds like a drop in the bucket. How are they ever going to even measure the impact? I believe this is the worst man-made disaster ever and it's getting worse every hour.

I don't think you are being overly dramatic Nizhoni. This is so sad and frustrating, I feel the same way as you about just peeking at the headlines or watching just small portions about this on the news. I think if I tried to take it all in, it would be too devastating all at once.

The difference with this tragedy and the Icelandic volcano is that this was a man-made catastrophe. I feel especially horrible for the people of this region because they are still recovering from Katrina....now this.

I think we will all be experiencing fall out from this disaster for decades to come.

I feel sickened by what's happening and so powerless to do anything about it. I really don't understand when they say "Obama must DO something!" What can he do? Unfortunately, the experts on the subject are the very same people to caused this disaster to happen by not preparing for the worst.

Like so many of you here I feel angry, sickened, sad,upset and powerless to do much of a practical nature about this particular situation.

However, those of us who are Christians can PRAY !!! Prayer is very powerful and effective as scripture says and those of us who Know God personally know that God will hear our prayers if we ask in Jesus name.I have just been praying about this situation as I was writing this post/response. We can also take care of our own environment where we live, pick up litter and put it where it should go and teach children by example.

It is easy to become overwhelmed by such situations and slide into despair but we should remember that God uses human agencies such as governments to get things done and put pressure on big organisations like OIl companies to make them take responsibility for their actions. I was encouraged to hear that Obama was angry about the oil spill and determined to hold the oil company to account over the way the situation was managed. The fact that people still need oil and these companies are massive employers should not let the directors get away with attitudes complacency or arrogance and think that thet can just buy themselves out of trouble after it happens inestaed of acting responsibly to prevent the sitautions from arising... through proper investment. Finally it is such a tragedy that MONEY and vested interests so often/usually blind people in authority from preventing property developers from destroying what is left of this beautiful earth eg: the Beautiful rainforests in Brazil Peru and other parts of the world.
