what is the difference between encima and arriba. how do you use them?

Encima is typically used for "on top of".
Donde esta mi sombrero (where is my hat)?
Encima la mesa (on the table).
Ariba is more often used for "up", or signifying a change in height (and higher = mas ariba).
Esta aqui (is it here)?
No, esta mas ariba (no, it's higher).
