In my experience, "hogar" is used for "home" and "casa" is used for "house."

A house is a structure, and home is the concept. A house is a concrete building with two doors and windows, it is white with a red trim, it has a big yard, it costs $200,000--and the mortgage causes you to be in debt up to your eyeballs.

Home is your personal sanctuary where you retreat from the world. Home is where you make your memories with your family. Home is a small part of the world that belongs to you.

That is how I differentiate the two.
