I have been trying to find this to use as an answer to a HW question... what is it exactly? And what is the noun form of "spill"?

I've been hearing el derrame petrolero, el derrame de petroleo and el derrame (no need for de petroleo these days; everyone knows what you're talking about) a lot in the news. I've also heard it referred to as la mancha negra, the black stain, or just la mancha. Here are the results of a BBC Mundo search I did for el golfo de México with several examples of ways the spill is referred to and how it's talked about in Spanish.

I'm sorry, but I've not quite understood your comment ("kthxbai"). Is that "Okay, thanks, bye"? If so, you're welcome. If not, I need to study up on my text messaging-ese. - MacFadden, Jun 10, 2010
:D sorry you sound great at spanish... if i was i wouldnt have to use text messaging-ese. and yes it means K, THanX, Bai. "bai" is spelled weird cuz its cooler that way. xD thanks anyway - hichiro16, Jun 10, 2010
Haha. I see. Thanks for explaining that to me. And you're most welcome. - MacFadden, Jun 10, 2010

Besides the terms MacFadden mentioned, I also hear derrame petrolero. It's also referred to as el vertido (the spill) and la fuga (the leak).
