Pronunciation of "ll"

How is "ll" pronounced in Spanish? Sometimes it seems as if I am hearing a "y" sound and sometimes it seems like a "j" sound. I am especially thinking of words like "Ella" and "silla". Thank you!

Hi Laura. Welcome to the SpanishDict forum. grin

I, and others in Latin America and Mexico, pronounce it as a "y." Silla = See-ya

In Argentina and other places it can be pronounced as a "J" or "sh" sound.

Thank you, Marianne! There are two different speakers on the Rosetta Stone program, and they both pronounce it differently. It helps to know it's regional. Gracias! - LauraHiscock, Jun 8, 2010
And in parts of Spain it's pronounced like the "llia", as in the English name William - KevinB, Jun 8, 2010
