how do you know when to use soy and estoy?

I know you should say ~Estoy bien~ and ~Soy divertida y amigasta.~ But my teacher keeps telling me it is way more complicated! What are the rules for using ser and estar?

Take a look at the lesson in the Reference section on the differences between "ser" and "estar" and you'll understand a bit better.

"Ser" is used to classify and identify permanent or lasting attributes. It describes a thing or person's character, identity or description, including occupations.

"Mary es bonita" -- "La flor es amarillo" -- "Jose es intelligente" -- "Soy estudiante"

"Estar" is used to talk about the temporary state of things, emotions, and location.

"Estoy enojada" -- "Neuva York está en en los Estados Unidos" -- "Está en la tienda"

These are just a few examples, but take a look at the lesson.

P.s. although it's a very permanent state of being, we say "está muerto" for someone who's dead.
