There are some very interesting comments above which i have enjoyed reading and this is such an interesting topic as either way we will all be affected.
As far as prophecy goes I think the Bible has the most detailed and most reliable record for getting things right.
No particular year for the world ending is mentioned in the Bible and definitely no end of the planet (Eccl 1:4) but there are lots of references to the end of a 'system of things' and the 'last days' and lots of signs to watch out for - such as earthquakes in one place after another. (Matt 24:7)
There's also a very interesting portion in the book of Daniel 2:31-45 which shows that we are living in the time period that has the last form of human government on the earth.
This section of the Bible lists the kingdoms or governments - starting with Babylon and then a number of succeeding rulerships, right up to the governmental systems we have today and shows our governments to be the very last forms of human rulership ever to be on the earth.
It makes very interesting reading and as it was written around 536 BCE and all the governments/rulerships have happened exactly as foretold, we're definitely living in a very exciting time period.
So according to Bible prophecy the end of 'this system of things' is good news as it heralds in a much better system restoring balance to the earth and it's inhabitants. (Rev 21:3,4)

Was it the Aztec or the Mayan calendar that said the world will end in 2012? The way I see it, if they could see way into the future that far, why couldn't their own culture and civilization survive? Why didn't they see that coming? And you'd think if they did, they would have done something to change it.

The world is not going to end according to many 2012 luminaries...2012 merely marks the beginning of a new era ......It is speculated that 2012 marks a shift in human consciousness, a time when human kind departs from a "spirit of competition" to a "spirit of cooperation." This may be due to events that will require a much greater level of cooperation. .... Other eras we have already experienced are for example, ice age, the Dark Ages or Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Globalization (now) and so forth. Each with its own distinctive set of dynamics.
It;s interesting to contemplate...but there is no need to panic...the world is not ending. Apocalypse can mean the death of one era, and the birth of a new.
The shift will begin, but will happen slowly and steadily and it may not be until 2050 that we really see the drastic difference as humans struggle to shed the old skin and old way of life. The generations being born include however, the "children of the shift," also called system busters who will prepare the way for a world in need of cooperation and care.

Whether the world ends in 2012 (which it won´t) or in 5000, we all have to face our own end. We all have our own end of our world when we die. You are part of the alarming statistic that 10 out of 10 die. Be sure to find out what happens when you die, for all will.
I saw the movie 2012. The way the world is going to end is not that glorious. 
We see our planet as a big strong and sturdy mass recovering and self-healing...true but that is probably because there is still some kind of equilibrium. It is possible when we go beyond the limits of what it can take we'll start a big chain reaction and who knows the outcome. There are plenty ways of seeing the end of humanity or even of the whole planet, some we can't do anything about (meteorites, solar explosion, etc.) and some we must do something about (pollution to start with.)
Everything ends in a new beginning.

What do you think? If you think about it, you don't need the world to go out with a bang. It's already dying, with all the wars and killing and pollution happening with so little respect for others. At least, that's my take on it.
I look forward to it if it means restarting life the right way and eliminating the multi millions things humanity is doing wrong.
We could all die, a meteor could hit the earth, plague or other, but i'm sure the world will still be here.
