Dear experts,

I'm having trouble translating the word "problematizar" in this context:

Sólo más recientemente, y desde el año 2004, se intenta problematizar el estudio de las pinturas desde una aproximación tecnológica con los consecuentes muestreos y análisis de pinturas del río Salado de la región de Antofagasta de la precordillera de Arica y de la zona Patagónica .

I think it is saying that it is "trying to question the study"

The definition in the El Pais dictionary makes it clear The definitiona to call into question and to anyalze the complicated aspects or doubts that they bring So Eddy is right it is fancy word for to question something and it probably more proper than cuestionar.

"Problematizar" in this instance appears to mean to convert the process of examination to a set of reproducible procedures or algorithms which can be used to provide verifiable (and, in some cases, quantifiable) results.

I've seen the exceedingly ugly word, "algorithmetize" used for this in English.

PS I, too, read the RAE description and it made my head hurt.
