Female cats and dogs

The words for cats and dogs are los gatos y los perros - the masculine form. What would you say if you want to indicate female cats or female dogs?

That's easy, I should have known that. I thought it would be a different word. Like cartero is a mailman. But cartera is a purse, not a lady mail carrier. Right? - Neffgirl, Jun 7, 2010
Right; however in Mexico at least, Cartera is used more for wallet and Bolsa is Purse. But this is just local usage. - 005faa61, Jun 7, 2010
