Somebody please help me translate this!
I seriously need help distinguishing which verbs need to be conjugated in the preterit tense, and which ones need to be in the imperfect. If you can only translate a little, it still helps
The Aztecs were an Indian tribe located in North Mexico. The were happy people that lived in a beautiful place called Aztlan until their main god, Huitzilopochtli, told them they must leave. They traveled south for many years until they saw a cactus on an island in the middle of a lake. On top of the cactus there was an eagle. When the eagle lowered it's head in the direction of the Aztecs, they knew the island was the promised place. Step by step, they built the great capital of Tenochtitlan. Then, in 1521, Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, and his soldiers destroyed the city completely. The ruins of Tenochtitlan, now called Mexico City, are visited often by tourists.

Los Aztecas fueron una tribu india localizada al norte de Mexico.Ellos fueron personas felices que vivieron en un bello lugar llamado Aztlan hasta que su principal dios Huitzilopochtli les dijo que tenian que irse.Ellos viajaron al sur por muchos años hasta que ellos vieron un cactus sobre una isla en medio de un lago.En la punta del cactus habia una aguila,cuando el aguila bajo su cabeza en direccion de los Aztecas,ellos supieron que la isla fue el lugar prometido.Poco a poco ellos construyeron la gran capital de Tenochtitlan.Despues en 1521,el conquistador español,Hernan Cortes,y sus soldados destruyeron la ciudad completamente.Las ruinas de Tenochtitlan, ahora llamada la ciudad de Mexico,son visitadas frecuentemente por turistas.
