College/University **Free** Spanish Courses . . .

I thought I would pass along some information regarding the possibility of taking College/University level Spanish courses for free in the United States (EE UU).

I discovered last fall that most colleges and universities in Minnesota and Wisconsin offer free Spanish courses to people meeting the following requirements:

  • You must be a resident of the state in which the college/university is located

  • You must be a "senior citizen"--that usually means 60 years of age or older

  • You can only register on a space available basis--usually after tuition paying students have registered

  • You will be auditing the course--that is, you will not receive credits or a grade for the course.

I found some differences between the rules for Minnesota and Wisconsin colleges and universities. For example, at the university of Minnesota, a senior citizen could enroll for credit, and not just as an audit, for only $20 USD per credit. This doesn't seem to be an option in Wisconsin.

Also, there can be some registration requirements that could be difficult to meet. For example, at the University of Wisconsin, a senior can only register to audit a course for free on day 5 of the semester. Not on day 4, nor on day 6!

However, you may find, as I did, a friendly and helpful person in the registrar's office who would be willing to hold your registration form for you and turn it in for you on the exact day that is required.

I assume that this option is available to senior citizens in other U.S. States, and perhaps other countries. So, I thought I would mention this in a posting.

If anyone else knows of any great deals like this anywhere else in the world, please post the information in an answer!

I hope that this is not inappropriate for a posting on this Web site!

Thank you so much for sharing Pajaro. There is no problem with posting this information in a thread. We regularly share information about sites, books and programs that we have found to be helpful. That is one of the great things about this forum. No one hoards their secrets, we all willingly and happily share!!

Mucha gracias. smile
