Are these interchangeable or do you use or do you use one or the other under different circumstances?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Good question.

A + el is contracted to be "Al." For example, "Voy al gimnasio" (I'm going to the gym). Gimnasio is masculine so we use the definite article "el."

A + la is not contracted. For example, "Voy a la tienda" (I'm going to the store). Tienda is feminine so we use the definite article "la."
