Can you use the verb 'intentar' to say 'I am trying'. My friend tells me that I can not because I am not the intencion but generally I don't like to take one persons word for something, so if anybody could clarify this that would be great cheers.

I looked up "estoy intentando" online and got lots of hits:
Estoy intentando quedarme embarazada...
Estoy intentando de nuevo...
Estoy intentando crear una...
Estoy intentando aprender español...
I would also use "Estoy tratando de....." (the "de" always goes with it)
Estoy tratando de averiguarlo...
Estoy tratando de encontrar.....
