If they had ever wanted.......

If they had ever wanted.......

I think alguna vez is the phrase that means ever here. "Les pregunto a ellos si o no habian querido alguna vez tener un perro". I asked them whether or not they had ever wanted to have a dog. Is that right? Gracias.

Yes to alguna vez. You can simplify your verb and still get the same meaning across.

Les pregunté si alguna vez querían un perro.

You have the right idea, but not the right mode. "Les pregunté si algunas vez habían querido un perro", or "Les pregunté si alguna vez quisieron un perro" - Gekkosan, Jun 1, 2010

"Alguna vez". Literally "some old time or other" but liberally, yup! "ever".

But you knew that.
