According to the RAE, this is :

  1. f. Mujer que en los grandes hoteles tiene a su cargo el servicio de un piso en lo tocante a limpieza de habitaciones, conservación del mobiliario, alfombras y demás enseres.

  2. f. Encargada de la administración de una casa o institución.

So, if is a man doing tis job, is he a "gobernanto"?

I had not heard that word before, but from the definition given, wouldn't this be the same as a "governess" in English? - Gekkosan, May 28, 2010

No, he is a governante o gobernador (if he's a goverment official)

Not the same at all. Look at the definitions in the RAE dictionary. - 00e657d4, May 28, 2010

No, he would be termed subempleado o subutilizado.

Now, stand back and watch the s**t hit the fan! big surprise

Some positions we completely change words for if the sex of the person doing it changes. The cleaning lady if male would probably be called a janitor. We don't call him the cleaning man. You're asking something akin to what is a male governess? We would use another title if a male held the same position.
