I think Tamal's got it right here. There's no change of subjuct so there's no need to conjugate the verb.

"I hope to understand the question"

If, as some of us seem to suggest, this means "I would like to think that I understand the question" then the question is not framed in a way that a native English speaker would ask it; it is already a translation from Spanish (or whatever). However, the request for a subjunctive appears to mean that this is, indeed, the intended meaning and "Espero que entienda la pregunta" is correct.

If. on the other hand, it means "I hope to understand the question once the meaning has dawned on me or further information has been given" then the simple answer "Espero entender la pregunta" is fine. There is no reason for using a subjunctive as there is no conjectural element etc.

My apologies to Samdie who has said this already but 1) I was typing this opus of mine while he was posting his version and 2) I hope that this may give a tad more insight.

It would appear to me that foysoy was wanting to know how to write his sentance using the subjunctive mood so his intended meaning would be 'I hope that I will understand the question' in which case;

"Espero que yo entenda la pergunta" would reflect the meaning he was trying to coomunicate.

Foysoy please let me know/let us all know if this what you were meaning, okay?

(The reason I am asking this is so that we can understand your motivation/intention behind the question )

'I hope to .. understand the question' (I hope one day to understand) future meaning

I hope to... is commonly used in English speech but has a different meaning as shown above.

But it seems to me that the real meaning of the sentence in English should be written as:

I hope '(that) I understand' the question (is better use of grammer)

= Espero que yo entienda la pergunta.

(the subjunctive here is used to express hopes, wishes. emotions etc (please see Paralee's acronym W.E.I.R.D.O.in lesson 3.1 for a better understanding/ further clarification on use of subjunctive mood)

use the personal pronoun yo for additional clarification, as Eddy correctly states

I may be totally wrong, and please explain why if I am; but, since there is no change of subject in the sentence: "I hope to (that I) understand the question". I don't see why it would require the use of the subjunctive, no matter how it's translated!

It seems to me that in order for this sentence to be subjunctive it would have to be:

"I hope that you understand the question". This includes a change of subject from "I hope" to "you understand".

Please correct me, if I'm wrong!!!

"I hope to understand the question".

Implies a future understanding. (Espero entender la pregunta.) It is quite different from saying "I hope that I understand the question." (Espero que entienda la pregunta.) The question, as posed, lacks sufficient context to determine which would be the better translation.
