If I want to say the smoke burns my eyes, do I use the word quema?

I see that quema is a noun, but I need the verb for "burns" - as in the smoke burns my eyes

"Quemar" is a Spanish verb that is used to describe the results of the application of an extreme temperature to an object: "El fuego quemó la comida" or "El frío durante el invierno quemó las plantas".

For the sentence you gave as an example, I'd use the verb "picar": "El humo me pica los ojos". That's how it's said in certain parts of Mexico.

I simply cannot imagine smoke literally burning something. Not at least in Spanish.

On an only slightly related note, I have heard "quemar" used for "burning" CD's (which of course, is not literal burning, but recording).
