imperfect tense

Is this tense just a past tense for expample: sentía - i felt or parecían - we appeared? I was under the impressin thatit was i used to feel or we used to appear but the spanish book i am reading is all in imperfect tense and is translating into what i thought was preterite! Have i just got them muddled up? Thanks
