If I want to say, "He spent all his time in the temple, praying and sacrificing," what tense are "praying and sacrificing" in? Do I use the gerund, or what?

I would say that you would use the imperfect since there is no clear indication as to when the action was completed ...only that he spent all his time in the temple.

El pasó todo su tiempo en el templo, estaba orando y sacrificando

= He spent all his time in the temple praying and sacrificing

I am including the personal pronoun because the verb being conjugated in the 3rd person singular needs clarification in this instance.

' to pray' can be translated either by orar or rezar

(I have to say that I prefer' orar')
