Why do some dictionaries say monte means woodland?
I always thought monte was hill but I saw two spanish dictionaries that said Monte also means woodland

According to the Gran Diccionario Oxford, monte, with regard to geography, can mean "montaña" or, in the sense of "terreno"..well, let me just quote:
1 (Geog)
a (montaña) mountain
b (terreno cubierto de maleza) scrubland, scrub; ( cubierto de árboles) woodland;
The dictionary lists other meanings, too, including
monte de piedad = pawnshop
The Collins also lists "hill" (=cerro), "countryside" (=campo) and - as you indicate in your question "woodland" (=bosque)
In that regard, Collins notes that "monte" can be "alto" (forest) or "bajo" (scrubland)
........and Collins lists an odd meaning for Latin America = hierba or =hachís.
