I am a little confused about the application for the word "about". Can someone help explain when these should be used or are they interchangeable.

They are interchangeable in the "about" context: "la película es sobre...." or "la película es acerca de..." both mean "The movie is about..."

BUT sobre also means "on": "El plato está sobre la mesa" "The plate is on the table"...etc
