Prefiero estudiar por la tarde. I prefer to study/studying in the afternoon.

In your original question, the problem was that you accidentally switched verbs in question one.
The question asked when you preferred to study,and you wrote when you preferred to go.
This is what Geof was talking about in his answer, and as Keven has written, you were correct in the first place to follow prefiero with an infinitive. ![]()
