Ser vs. Estar With a Confusing Gerund

Ser vs. Estar With a Confusing Gerund

This may be a stupid question but can someone please translate and complete the dialog:

Amanda: ¿Qué hace Marta? Pedro: _____ trabajando en la oficina.

A) Está B) Es

I think it is A) Está, since trabajando - working, is a temporary status and not an occupation. This logic may be completely wrong though. Thanks!

You're right! It's "está" trabajando.

It's not "ser" because it's not describing Pedro's characteristics, his occupation, his origin, etc.

Welcome to the forum. grin

You can use estar + gerund for current actions that are taking place now.

"Estoy comiendo." (I am eating)

"Está durmiendo." (She is sleeping)

"Estamos hablando." (We are talking)

- Luciente, May 17, 2010
- samdie, May 18, 2010
