The purpose of personal questions?

The purpose of personal questions?

I was just wondering what the purpose of personal questions is because I have noticed that people ask very opinionated ones. I'm not saying I have a problem with it; I was just wondering if the purpose was to answer in Spanish as well as English and learn more while also expressing friendly banter on our opinons. Is this correct? What are your opinions on this? And yes, I'm aware that this is an opinion question about opinion questions. wink An example would be Heidita's question about men thinking things through.

HI mamasita, whereas I don't think you are referring to my question only, I think I can answer your quest:

I created the "General discussion" category precisely to make the forum more interesting and not only a "grammar" site.

There are many learning sites on the web, for example livemocha, which also offers free lessons (I think). However, there is no forum and especially no General discussion area, which in my opinion is a drawback for those sites.

On General discussions you can ask for support in difficult moments in your life, you can express your opinion, you can put your foot in your mouth, which you should avoid, mind youraspberry, you can meet people, you can get to know people better. this is not possible on the "questions" part of the forum, answering questions we do not talk about our lives or likes or dislikes. In short, you become part of a community, and in an open community. This is what other sites lack.

Heidita is right. I joined livemocha.com and did the free lessons, which are pretty good. I then did the essay things where people answer and correct through a wierd kind of server side updater, but it isn't personal, and so, it isn't fun. Wordreference.com is a great learning site too but it is also not fun. We are like sesame street here. We learn, we love, we get grumpy and act silly, but we always make it about Spanish. Gracias.

Para mi,

It is the exchange of thought and the different perspectives others have, I find it interesting.

It makes the forum more interesting. It engages the SD community and we get to know each other a bit better.

How would you feel if the only topics were "How do I say my name in Spanish?"

I for one, love the "General Discussions" category. There have been so many times when I have written something or someone else has written something concerning religious, political beliefs, etc., when I thought that there would be trouble. However, I am always pleasantly surprised.

The members of this forum are very opinionated, but are also very tolerant of each other. Once in awhile we get carried away and say things we shouldn't. But even then, I always see apologies offered and relationships quickly restored. It is truly amazing. I wish relationships in the rest of the world were handled in the same way. We would have a much more peaceful world! smile

exactly! I answered a question concerning the bomb scare in times square and my answer was I wish that we could live in peace but in our world it's impossible. I wish the rest of our lives could be like spanishdict :) - mamasita_s, May 18, 2010
thanks a lot, mamacita for this - 00494d19, May 18, 2010

I am sure there are people who don't like this kind of thing (sometimes people just leave a comment "what does this have to do with Spanish?" ), but anyway, after all you don't have to participate in any of those threadswink

I'm glad for the answers section because without it, I would be bored out of my mind! I've taken a break from the lessons because I've learnt so much that I get so far ahead in school that I grow bored. So I always come here and see what people are talking about! I always learn something new. I think that's why learning here is so easy, you get to communicate with real people, not just a computer.

Plus, my school teacher isn't really the best at Spanish and doesn't explain things well. I feel I've learnt more here than school. :D - Austin67427, May 18, 2010
thank you aga, I am glad you think this way:) - 00494d19, May 18, 2010
yes it's easy to learn here because you learn at your own pace :) - mamasita_s, May 19, 2010

I was just wondering because I've noticed on some threads, people don't post answers in both languages.

SpanishDict es una comunidad smile y por eso es divertido charlar un poco. Pero a veces me siento culpable de contestar muchas preguntas en inglés porque cada pregunta puede ser una nueva oportunidad para practicar español.
