Not sure if this is really a vocab question, but.... In english conversations on instant messengers or texts we use abbreviations like lol= laughing out loud, brb= be right back, and others. My question is if two spanish speaking people are typing in a chat or an IM are there any equivalent abbreviations that are commonly used'

For LOL in Spanish, you can type jeje, which is their way of expressing laughter in shorthand. I blogged about this topic of text msging in Spanish a few months ago. You can check it out here:

yeah and those are actually the two most common ones. it gets worse. if you ever happen to look over the shoulder of a teenager instant messaging you will get completely lost. (pir= parent in room, rofl= rolling on the floor laughing, lmfao= laughing my f'ing ass off, btw= by the way, wtf=what the f', bff= best friend forever, tmth= too much too handle.) Seriously the list goes on and on and everyone around my age knows exactly what they all mean.

that's the problem with abreviations, i thought "lol" meant lots of love. why don't people say what they mean. makes life a lot easier and a lot less confusion results.
