ante y antes
The dictionary says that ante is a prepositon and that antes is an adverb, but I'm afraid to admit that I don't really understand the difference. Learning Spanish is like learning grammar for the first time because there is alsorts of grammar terms I did not know before!

"Ante" is very similar to "delante de".
Estoy ante mi computadora.
Estoy delante de mi computadora.
Estoy ante el juez.
Estoy delante del juez.
Estaba ante la puerta de su casa.
Estaba delante de la puerta de su casa.
In addition to that, "ante" is like "opposite" because the other person is supposed to be looking at you.
For example:
Ella estaba delante de mi en el cine. (I am seeing the back of the other person) (On this occasion, I cannot say: ella estaba ante mi en el cine).
Ella estaba delante del juez.
Ella estaba ante el juez.
"Antes" is like "before".
Before you go, tell him the truth. (Antes de irte, dile la verdad).

From what I'm seeing online "ante" is like "in front of" and "antes" is the preposition "before."
Cierra la puerta antes de irte. (Shut the door before you leave.)
Hay una taza ante mi computadora. (There is a cup in front of my computer.)
