Deberes =homework in the context of your sentance

Juan y yo todavia no hemos hacho los deberes = Juan and I have still not done our homework

deberes comes from the verb deber =must, to owe, should, ought to

another word for homework is = tarea

for example:"tengo que hacer las tareas" = I must do my homework (deberes escolares)

Deberes are obligations, including debts.
