Arizona Immigration

I was just wondering what people's general feelings toward this new immigration law is. I personally find it repulsive and think it needs to be ended.

I'm wondering if I dragged my anglo face to South America if I would be offended by the police stopping me to check my travel papers. I don't think so.

However, if I were there illegally....

When I was in Mexico I had to go through check points by the Federales (sp?). I think they gave me a hard time because I was obviously not from around the area. I just showed them my car rental papers and my drivers license. Told them everything they needed to know. And the military rifles didn't scare me. They let me go on my way.

I haven't been keeping up on that piece of news, but I think if Arizona stops everybody at check points it would be fair. As long as they don't racially profile people.

Remember, Caesar Chavez was against illegal imigration. It is bad for the legal workers here already. iIlegal imigration keeps people in poverty and classes them beneath everyone else with no way up to live the American dream.

Doubtlessly there must be a reasonable degree of control. But when you go from control to active prosecution and harassment, it is not democracy and rule of law any longer. And that's what we have as a fact in several Latin American countries. - Gekkosan, May 14, 2010
Many (most?) of those checkpoints (in some places in Latin America) are not about true immigration control, but about graft and political control. I'm not speculating. I'm stating a fact. - Gekkosan, May 14, 2010
From what I understand, most of the people questioned will be people who are being picked up by the van load to go work in the fields. - Oblaidon, May 14, 2010

I would not be offended if they would stop me to ask for my papers, because I have papers. I waited to enter the US legally and made long lines and paid the required fees to enter this beautiful country legally. If you don't have anything to fear, why would you be offended if somebody stops you and asks you for your ID? "El que nada debe, nada teme".

I don't know all the details behind their new "law", but from what I've heard it's absolutely horrible.

In my view, it is clearly a law that goes far beyond the reasonable requirements for immigration control and national security. I don't doubt that there is a great deal of bigotry involved in its drafting.
