This is a website quiz. Do you know why sometimes a person can earn more than 200 reputation a day (for example, in the past, Melipiru earned 220 reputation and Yesero earned 210 reputation during 24 hrs)?
Why does a person earn -18 reputation after being voted?

First, why a person can get over 200 reputation
It is true for the case one votes for answers of that person, then un-votes, and revotes.
For example, once Melipiru attained 200 rep during 24 hrs. Because all votes at that time would give her 0 rep, I un-voted 2 answers of hers (10 rep each) (down to 180 rep a day). She came back to 200 rep in a short time. When I revoted those 2 answers, she was scored 220 rep.
It is done because a vote can’t change its value and time. A vote with X rep Y hrs ago can’t change its position at point stream for reputation when revoting (and also, we aren’t noticed at all if un-voted). To know whether we are un-voted, we need to consider total reputation.
Second, why a person can earn –X reputation for being voted or voting
-It happens when total reputation during 24 hrs is over 200 reputation. If a person is having 200 + r reputation, he/she will earn –r rep after being voted at that time.
-I have a recent experiment with Heidi’s reputation. At that time, she had 200 rep. I un-voted an answer within 24 hrs (down to 190), voted for another, and then re-voted for the previous (to let her have 210). I tried to vote and she earned -10, down to 200. When continuing that process with 23 times to earn -10 rep, she went down to -20 rep during 24 hrs. But when I un-voted an answer that had given her 10 rep, the next vote gave her 0 rep. And she stayed with -20.
Set the 24 hr total reputation of Heidi (over 200 rep) is R. Let T, L be the 24hr total (after being voted) and the lost reputation respectively. We have T-L=R. For example, T=-20, L=23 (-10) = -230, then R= 210. If T=200, L= -10, then R= 210. In Rikko’s case, T= 100, L= 11 (-10) = -110, R=210.
If we un-vote some answers or they are out of 24 hrs, R will be down to under 200, and the deduction ended. When an answer (“Picture of the Day”) of Rikko (that gave him 10 rep) became out of 24 hrs, T=90, R=200, he earned 0 rep for being voted. Besides, if R> 200, each vote of Rikko would give him -10 rep.
Thus, if you want to support a person to earn more than 200 rep a day, you should re-vote after 24 hrs since the first vote. It is true that a person can let another he/she hates lose points infinitely and it looks serious.

OK...here is another try...one earns negative points because his reputation for the last 24 hours somehow has gone over 200...let's say it became 210...
Probably the software is designed to display the figure: (200 - current_reputation_24 ) or "10" in the place of the X in the message: "You earned X rep for being voted up on..."
The message is triggered by the event "somebody voting"...so this is what we get when somebody voting and we are over 200 =>
...=> 200-210 = -10 i.e. negative reputation points or the message:
"You earned -10 rep for being voted up on..."
And why are we >200?...probably has to do with the 24-hours checking period...somehow we got over before it was last checked...
To prevent one from earning points just by voting for answers. You get points less than a multiple of ten when that's all that's left of your 200 daily limit. Correct?
¡Estoy muy confundido! I still have no idea why any of the points would be negative. I saw flags mentioned earlier. Did someone flag Rikko as a demonstration of this thread? Is something else going on? Is his geographical location the culprit? What is happening?

-10s. But I've only been looking for a week or two. Are you messing with all of us? Do you know the answer and are waiting to see who can come up with it or not know and waiting for one that makes sense?

I just noticed something rather strange now. A while ago when I was trying to figure out where you got the 210 points, I found it by clicking on the reputation value. I am very sure the value when I clicked it earlier was 6.1K. However, just now when I looked at my reputation total on top of the page, I saw 6K. I wonder what happened to the 0.1k I had earlier. Did I get flagged somewhere?

You can't earn more than 200 reputation a day. This is to allow others to have a chance to "beat" your reputation. Like when someone makes a really cool game and it gets more than 40 votes.If that person got 400 points that day, it would be more difficult for people with lower scores to catch up. You can earn less that the points you should get when you reach your 200 point limit for the 24hours. So, if you already got 182 points for the day and you got an answer accepted, it shows up as 18 points to keep you from exceeding your 200 reputation limit.

I think the reputation variable is stored in 2 different locations, the first one holding the accumulative value and updated on every voting (event) and the second one updated in a (small) time interval getting the current value of the first...
It can happen that the accumulation on the first location exceeds 200 in the short time interval before the second one is updated. Then we have for example 210 for some time, and during that time "negative" votes are triggered...as happened to Rikko when you all tried to restore his rep points
I don't have an answer to this question; however, in the past few hours since I noticed this question, I've been tracking my "reputation points". I've been wondering when/how the 24 hr. time period is determined.
Here's what I discovered. It seems as if the 24 hr. time frame is constantly changing and is based upon when a person achieved their most recent 200 point maximum. For example: If 23 hrs. ago I achieved my 200 pt. limit based on 20 reputation points earned at that moment, then 1 hour (and 1 minute?) from now I should have 20 reputation points available to be earned.
Does this make sense to anyone?

I asked about this a week ago using the "contact" link that you can find if you search diligently enough. To date no answer. One clarification I'd love to have is what constitutes a "day". Is it twenty four hours back from this very second or does it run like other folks' days from midnight to midnight and if the latter then whose midnight??
Re danrivera's comment - it seems to me that it's minute by minute too. However after 45 years in the business of advising people what systems they need, designing them, fixing them, editing them, reporting on them, advising on how to design them etc. I find I like to have a specification and with it a user guide that actually defines details like these.
The "day" is not a calendar day. It is a rolling 24 hour period from the time at any moment.That might be why you see the number drop off.
I read this whole thing and still do not understand how you get more than 200.And I have seen -10 show up on my points when I was voted up and have no explanation. If I am at 200 usually votes just show as 0
Huh? Fidalgo, I have a feeling this may be a stupid question, but how did you know about those 210 points? What I normally see in my profile page is that there is a list activities and included there are the points I earn for voting an answer or getting a vote for my answer, among other things. I do notice that at times I get a number of "0" points, but I always assume that that's because I already reached 200 points. Like I think a couple of hours ago I already saw those "0" points, but I have no idea that it's 210 points as you said. Is it an administrator's privilege to see those values or am I just missing something here?

One probably earns negative reputation (-10) when being unvoted, right Fidalgo?...Btw is someone experimenting with Rikko's points, so the software can be tested?
OK, this is getting more strange now. I just looked at my profile and saw that some of my -10 points are now just 0 points. There are still some -10 points though. Then someone just voted for one of my answers and the activity list says that I got a +10, however, when I look at my reputation points for the day, it's down to 80. So that means, the +10 I just got became a -10 in the summation. I am really lost now with what's going on.
