How do you say in Spanish "prompting" in this context?

"Needed"? Change of tense is confusing. - geofc, May 12, 2010

I understand prompting like encourage (incitar a algo). Sus respuestas son limitadas y necesitan seguimiento (para mejorar)

or elicit (sacar) or educe (educir) if his answers were terse and didn't provide enough detail - 0074b507, May 12, 2010

Hello,

More context in needed. This could be an option depending on the context.

Sus respuestas eran limitadas y necesitaban ser incitadas/indicadas...

Theatrical "prompting" I'm told is "apuntar" so if you mean "prompting" like "whispering the good stuff in his ear while he's talking" then maybe you could say "sus respuestas fueran debiles y faltaban que fuera apuntada."

I take it that "limited" is sarcastic way of saying "pitiful" or some such.
