As in la comida, la gata. Is the la a feminine pronoun in itself or it just describes feminine pronouns?

comida and gata are nouns.
La is an article
So la comida, the food, the translation of la would be the , in Spanish it distinguishes gender.
La = the (feminine)
el = the (masculine)
