Limarse las uñas

Why do you use Limar in the phrase ¨Limarse las uñas¨ instead of the verb Cortar?
The dictionary said Limar had more to do with "filing ones nails" So would it be wrong to say Cortarse las uñas = to cut ones nails

They are both correct:
Cortarse.....To cut
Limarse........To file
