Is basura or chatarra a better word for junk?

"chatarra" means "junk" in the sense of undesirable things. "Junk cars" are "chatarra", "junk food is "comida chatarra". It doesn't mean "junk" in the sense of "stuff", such as "I have a lot of stuff/junk to carry home".
As mamasita said "basura" is "trash".

Junk is chatarra, but sometimes both words can be used indistinctly, just as "junk" and "trash" in English.

Basura literally means trash. Does that help? Also, chatarra literally means scrap.

I saw where chatarra means "scrap" as in a "scrap of something". I would go with basura (as it means garbage), personally but I am sure the gurus will weigh in soon!
