There's heaps of references to "subunidad" in Wikipedia Spanish. Maybe a quick look would find you some other options as well as giving you a clue if it's used for your exact requirement.

Welcome to the forum!
A literal translation is "subunidad", but to say that "La familia es una subunidad de la sociedad" sounds a bit formal. On the other hand, if you are writing a paper for a social science presentation, this is the way to say it.
